Moses has gone on the mountaintop to receive the ten commandments from the Lord. He left Aaron, his brother, in charge of the people. While Moses was gone the people talked Aaron into making a golden calf.
Exodus 32:1-2 (NIV)
32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”
Aaron was easily manipulated by the people. His faith was weak. Nothing like Moses faith. The people would not dare ask Moses this because they knew that Moses would quickly correct them. Aaron was not a strong leader. He gave in to their requests to do evil. They made this calf and then a wild party unfolded. Things were really getting out of control now. God was so angry with the people that he wanted to kill them but Moses interceded for the people.
Exodus 32:14 Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
Because of Moses intercession God did not kill the people. Moses was still looking out for the people even in his absence.
Sometimes we ask the question where is God? God is always there, even in your wrongdoing, even when you mess up, He is right there? Jesus did the same for us. He interceded for us. We may can not see him but He is there; right into the midst of your circumstance. When Jesus was on the cross dying, “He said Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” These people had just sentenced Him to death but He still had mercy on them. Jesus interceded for them. God did not destroy them. Jesus still intercedes even in 2014. I am glad. Thank God for Jesus.
